Bridge Repairs and Financing

Getting From Here to Install Day

If the advice is to wait for the right buying window, then something has to keep the door working in the meantime. That is the whole job of a bridge repair. It is deliberately cheap, deliberately limited, and it has an end date already written on it.

What a Bridge Repair Covers

What a bridge repair does not cover is anything structural. If a section is buckled, if the track is bent from a crooked lift, or if the opener is a pre entrapment protection unit with no photo eyes, we are not going to patch it and pretend. At that point the sensible advice changes and we will say so.

Knowing When Not to Bridge

There is a line where waiting stops making financial sense. Roughly, if the bridge work is going to run to a meaningful fraction of the door replacement itself, you are better off buying now and taking a worse seasonal price. We do this arithmetic out loud with you. A set of rollers and two hinges against a saving of several hundred dollars on the door is an easy call. A spring set, a cable set and a bottom bracket is a harder one and might tip the other way.

Financing, Honestly

Financing a garage door is a legitimate tool and it is also where a lot of homeowners get quietly overcharged. Three things are worth understanding before you sign anything.

Deferred interest is not the same as zero interest. A true zero percent promotion charges you nothing extra if you pay within the term. A deferred interest promotion looks identical in the advertisement, but if any balance at all is left when the promotional period ends, the interest is calculated retroactively from the original purchase date and added in one lump. People get caught by this every year. Ask directly which one you are being offered, and get the answer in writing.

Compare total cost, not the monthly payment. A longer term always produces a smaller monthly figure and a larger total. Take the payment, multiply it by the number of payments, and compare that number against the cash price. If the difference is a few percent on a job of several thousand dollars, that may be perfectly reasonable. If it is a third more, it is not financing, it is a price increase with a friendly face.

Watch what the financing does to the quote. Some dealers only quote a monthly figure, which makes it impossible to compare against a competitor quoting cash. Insist on the cash price first. Then discuss payment.

Never Finance a Spring Repair

This is the one we are firm about. A torsion spring replacement is a few hundred dollars and about ninety minutes of work. It is a wear part reaching the end of its cycle life, the same as brake pads. If somebody arrives at a broken spring call and starts talking about monthly payments, they are not there to fix your spring. They are there to sell you a door, in the one moment of the year when you have the least leverage, with your car sitting behind it.

Fix the spring. Use the garage. Get three quotes in daylight, in the quiet part of the year, and buy the door then. Call (714) 736-0278 and we will do the small job and leave the big one alone.
